COVID-19 & Yoga Classes in Burdett
Dear Yogis,
As concerns over the COVID-19 virus rise and impacts are felt closer to home, I want to assure you that I take my responsibility to promote wellness and to offer you a healthy, safe place to practice yoga seriously.
I have struggled in recent weeks trying to figure out how to offer my Costa Rica Yoga retreat (planned for April), as the virus was rapidly spreading internationally. That retreat is being postponed until 2021. Consequently, I have learned way too much about this virus and how quickly it can spread.
Now, there are confirmed cases in neighboring counties here. So what to do about classes?
Let’s face it – we practice in close proximity to each other, and a good class will have you sweating, detoxing, breathing deeply and maybe even blowing your nose. We touch our mats, blocks, blankets and sometimes our own feet. We don't usually take breaks during class to wash our hands, before and after wiping sweat from our brows. The possibility of spreading germs unknowingly is high.
In response to Governor Cuomo's Executive Order 202.3, and because I care very much about your well-being, I am cancelling classes until further notice. All class cards will be extended until the full schedule resumes.
This is a heartbreaking decision for me because in this time of uncertainty and concern for the health of our local and global communities, YOGA IS NEEDED NOW MORE THAN EVER.
We practice yoga to create space in our minds, our bodies and our hearts so that we can learn to pause and respond (rather than react), so that we have compassion for ourselves and for others, and so that we can be of service in this world. This is what is needed in this moment.
Please know that yoga is still available to you. Find a corner in your home, unroll your mat and listen to your body for what type of movement it needs. Take time to meditate, breathe and clear the mind. Take time to reconnect to nature, away from social media and the news. Take time to be of service and support your community, however you are able.
Join me for free online classes during this interim period!
In the meantime, may you and your loved ones be happy and healthy. As always, please reach out to me with questions.
With deep gratitude and love,
Katy
